OUTREACH AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS

High School Counseling

On site counseling services are provided on the Southcoast Health Van at Diman and Westport High Schools. Staff are also available in the Access Centers at Taunton High and Diman Regional Vocational High School. A family planning counselor is available at these schools to provide confidential educational counseling and help students schedule family planning appointments. Appointments to meet with a family planning counselor can be made through the school nurse or through the Access Center staff.

College Counseling

Our educational department staff is available at Bristol Community College and Wheaton College with informational, educational materials, and condoms. Once a month, an interactive outreach table is set up in the commuter lounge. Information is provided to students on family planning services, contraception, HIV, STD's, and condoms. Interactive games and provided to initiate discussion on these topics. Students can obtain supplies, information and have questions answerd.

Health Fairs

The education department staff participates in Health Fairs at local schools and in the community. Health Fairs are a great way for this program to interact with people in the community. It helps to increase awareness of program services as well as distribute information on pregnancy prevention and other health-related issues.

Peer Education

Peer leadership programs train youth form the community as peer counselors. Once trained, peer counselors speak to others about what they've learned. A peer advisor supervises all presentations. Contact the Family Planning Program if you are interested in either becoming a peer counselor/educator or having a presentation made before your group.

Young Parent Speaker Program

This program trains adolescent parents as peer educators. Speaking at schools, youth groups and community agencies, the Young Parents' presentations carry a pregnancy prevention message with a personal perspective.

Safe Teen Health

High school students are hired and trained in basic reproductive anatomy, birth control, pregnancy prevention, abstinence, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS and communication skills. They present this information to their peers in health classes and in the community.
